The Global X Research Team is pleased to release the distribution and premium numbers for our covered call ETFs for September 2023. Global X’s Covered Call suite of ETFs generally invest in the underlying securities of an index and sell call options on that index, an ETF tracking the underlying equity index, or a similar equity index. These strategies are designed to provide investors with an alternative source of income, while offering different sources of risks and returns to an income-oriented portfolio.

During the most recent roll period for the Global X Covered Call suite, running from August 18th to September 15th, the major U.S. equity indices rose in market value. Nvidia’s considerable earnings beat coupled with the Federal Reserve’s relatively dovish tone at last month’s Jackson Hole Economic Symposium led to an expression of positive market sentiment from investors.1,2 Indeed, the optimistic news stoked confidence that economist calls for a soft landing may come to fruition.
In this context, volatility markers that depict the expected movements of the broader markets experienced a reversal of fortune from the upward trends they exhibited during last month’s roll period. In fact, the VIX and VXN volatility indexes, measuring implied volatility for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, respectively, maintained fairly consistent negative trajectories. The former bottomed out at a 3-year low on September 14th at 12.79, while the VXN hit a nadir of 17.01.3 Consequently, the premiums obtained by the Global X Covered Call products came under pressure in the month of September, though QYLD and QYLE still provided a distribution up to their 1% cap level.
1As a general guideline, the monthly distribution of QYLD, XYLD, RYLD, DJIA, QYLE & XYLE is approximately capped at the lower of: a) half of premiums received, or b) 1% of net asset value (NAV). For QYLG, XYLG, RYLG, DYLG, TYLG, HYLG, & FYLG, the monthly distribution is approximately capped at the lower of: a) half of premiums received, or b) 0.5% of net asset value (NAV). The excess amount of option premiums received, if applicable, is reinvested into the fund. Year-end distributions can exceed the general guideline due to capital gains that are paid out at the end of the year.
